I’m an attorney and I get it. We all want more highly qualified, well paying clients right NOW. In college and law school, I just wanted to help people and I saw those who focused on business and making money as greedy and shallow. I wasn’t like those business majors and big firm soul-sellers. I was going to save the world. Upon my graduation, my favorite professor said, “Wendy, call me if you give all of your money away.”
Everything – even helping people – even practicing law – is a business
Of course, I laughed, gave him a hug, and naively walked into the world only to discover, as you might imagine, that everything – even helping people – even practicing law – is a business.
The good news for all attorneys – even those with idealistic goals – is that it IS possible to help people, have fun, and prosper financially all at the same time. I love that we can get more highly qualified clients without feeling as though we’re selling our souls.
It’s been 27 years since my professor sent me out into the world, understanding what I was sure to experience and learn. Ironically, I now serve as a law business strategist, helping attorneys to think entrepreneurially, increase revenue, and build the law firm/life they love – and, as you might guess, I’m the founder and CEO of Attorney Alchemy.
My forthcoming book, The Quick Start Guide to Legal Marketing: A Step-by-Step Blueprint for Getting More Clients is being published by the American Bar Association. A portion of my proceeds will be donated to literacy charities.
With years, dollars, successes, failures, and discoveries behind me, I vow to share all those hard-knock lessons with you, so you can jump ahead, avoiding many years and hundreds of thousands of dollars of learning.
